TaylorMade-adidas Golf continues to produce the most
inovative equipment in the industry. New to the TaylorMade lines are
the Tour-Tested and Tour-Proven Raylor
hybrid, which Tour pro Kenny Perry used to replace his 3-iron with at the
US Open this year at Bethpage Black. The first TaylorMade Raylor was actually
produced in 1988, an early entry in replacing persimmon woods used in fairway
and rough situations. The new Raylor comes in two lofts, 19° and
22°, and incorporates two key features that make the new Raylor so effective
from the rough. 1) A slightly sharp, slightly pointed leading edge and 2)
A "Raylor sole" shaped like ship's hull, sloping upward at the sides. The
Raylor hybrid becomes available starting on September 4, 2009 at a manufacturer's
suggested retail price of $229 per club.
Also new from TaylorMade-adidas Golf is the Penta TP,
the first tour ball with five solid-layers. Each layer is engineered
to optimize performance in five key shot categories that skilled players
need – driver, long-irons, middle-irons, short-irons and partial wedges.
The five layers of Penta TP include the core, inner mantle, middle mantle,
outer mantle and cover, and each one plays a critical role in optimizing
the performance of each of the five key shots. These layers are:Layer 1 – Cover. The soft Urethane Cover. Layer 2 – Outer Mantle. The firm and fast Outer Mantle. Layer 3 – Middle Mantle. The semi-firm and fast Middle Mantle. Layer 4 – Inner Mantle The soft, fast Inner Mantle. Layer 5 – Core. The extremely soft, low-compression core is the most critical layer to promoting high launch and low spin off the driver. Three years in development, the Five-Layer Penta TP is set to deliver a new level of performance in a golf ball. Penta TP becomes available starting on December 1, 2009 in the Sunbelt states (Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, southern California and Hawaii) and February 15, 2010 nationwide at a retail price of $45.99 per dozen. It was his second win on the PGA Tour this year, his fifth in the past 13 months and his first since switching to the new R9 460 driver. It was the 14th career PGA Tour win for the 48-year old Perry. His Traveler's win was a record-setter for the event at 22-under par that started with an opening-round 61 and finished with a final round 63 to hold off fellow TMaG staffer and R9™ 460 user Paul Goydos. This is as good a win as I've ever had," Perry said. "On Sunday, my golf was unbelievable. To shoot 22-under par, to break the all-time record of all the great champions that are on this trophy, it's unbelievable." With his R9 460, Kenny ranked 12th in driving distance with an average of 293.1 yards and T20th in driving accuracy at 80.4% of fairways hit. He also ranked T3rd in greens in regulation. Perry was one of 38 players who played an R9 driver, 14 of whom used the just-introduced R9 460.
