Welcome To The Wigwam - Valley of the Sun

By Greg Wires
In the early 20th century, executives of Goodyear Tire & Rubber discovered the West Valley of Phoenix as a prime location to grow cotton for rubber production. In 1918, they built a small gathering place for their executives to gather in the sun, far away from their home operations in Ohio. Today, the AAA Four-diamond resort called The Wigwam is a full-amenity destination just 15 miles from downtown Phoenix.

As a historic 'Hotel of America', The Wigwam is rich in history and full of recreational opportunities. With more than 300 casita guest rooms, 72 adobe-style suites, a 26,000 square foot spa and 54 holes of championship golf, the Valley of the Sun resort has recently undergone a $16 million renovation and is awaiting your arrival.

At The Wigwam, you will know you are in the desert southwest with the color schemes throughout the tastefully decorated rooms and public areas and around the delightfully maintained grounds. You will know you are in a vacation spot when choosing from the golf, the water slides and swimming pools, cooking and wine tasting events and multiple dining choices. We were lucky enough to visit during one of their juried art fairs. We were also there at the time of a US Kids Golf tournament, a testament to their commitment to the game and its future.

When you do visit The Wigwam, your dining choices will include Red's Bar and Grill, named after a former golf pro, The Wigwam Bar for quick and smaller plates, Tower Bar & Grill for poolside food and beverage, and for fine dining you can enjoy Litchfield's, the resort's signature restaurant named after Paul W. Litchfield, onetime Goodyear executive. With a top-notch menu and impressive wine list, your meal will be memorable. One of the real plusses we found at The Wigwam is that it provides luxury without pretense. It is upscale and casual at the same time. Locally sourced produce is a part of the cuisine and the freshness goes well beyond the food.

Of course, we are a lot about the golf and The Wigwam has three terrific offerings. It is the only golf club in Arizona to offer 54 holes of championship golf including two courses designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. The Wigwam's three 18-hole courses (Gold, Patriot and Heritage) each offer a challenge and scenic desert golf experience, though not necessarily a typical desert feel.

As the resort located nearest the 2015 Super Bowl, The Wigwam hosted a lot of corporate guests and they are well set up to handle this type of visitor, along with family and romance vacations. They have the space, the friendly staff and the amenities to make any getaway special. Golf Minnesota recommends The Wigwam.
